Real Food Spiced Pumpkin Latte
For almost 2 years I have done what I consider to be a fabulous job of keeping all things pumpkin off my blog. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good pumpkin recipe almost as much as the next gal, but it seems that almost every food blogger on the interwebs goes nuts every fall and winter and the only recipes you can find are ones containing pumpkin. In an effort to rebel and march to the beat of a different drummer, I resisted and refused to post pumpkin recipes. Until now. What changed my mind? My new Blendtec 725 blender changed my mind. It doesn’t happen often, but I have been known to…

Real Food Hot Cocoa Mix
For the past 20 or so years, I’ve tried in vain to like coffee. I’ve used every trick in the book and out of the book. It ain’t happenin’. Because I find coffee unpalatable, The Stud muffin is convinced that we can never ‘go out for coffee’ unless we’re both drinking coffee. It wouldn’t matter that I would be there with him, sipping a hot tea, or a hot chocolate. Nope. It’s not coffee, so therefore we can’t go out for coffee unless we’re both drinking coffee and if we both not drinking coffee and we happen to be out, we are officially not ‘out drinking coffee’, we’re just ‘out’. Yeah. TSM is…

Hot Chocolate Truffle Balls
I LOVE hot chocolate. My infatuation with high end sipping/drinking chocolate started with a gift from my hubby when he bought me some chocolate shavings and homemade marshmallows from Williams Sonoma. Did you know that there is a difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate? True to my love of dropping a knowledge bomb on you, I’m here to tell you there is and they are two very different beverages. Hot cocoa comes from a powder, while hot chocolate, also known as “drinking chocolate” or “sipping chocolate” is made from small shavings or chopped bits of chocolate or tiny chocolate “chips” that are melted (slowly and lovingly) and then blended with milk or…

Liquid Lullaby Sleep Tonic
I suffer from insomnia- I have since as long as I can remember. Many a night I will be awake until 4:00 am, 5:00 am, 6:00 am, sometimes even 7:00 am. It’s maddening. And so that I don’t waste my entire day, I force myself to get up after only about 5 hours of fitful sleep which just compounds my fatigue and sleepiness, making it beyond difficult to fall asleep the following evening. It’s a vicious cycle. I’ve been on Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy going on 18 months and it has helped to a large degree, but if I don’t have enough to keep me busy during the week, I find myself laying…

Conquering Milk Kefir
I did it! I really did it! I seriously have no idea what I was so afraid of. Making milk Kefir was probably one of the easiest things I’ve ever done in the kitchen. If you can pour milk, you can make Kefir! In fact, you could do this with your eyes closed and one hand tied behind your back. Yeah, you’d make a mess but who doesn’t enjoy a good mess in the kitchen? A fellow food blogger was nice enough to mail me some Kefir grains. When they arrived in the mail I freaked out, and tossed them in the fridge. Admittedly I have no idea when I was planning on…

Real Food Strawberry Lemonade
Earlier in the week we had the heat on. I was even wearing long sleeves to bed. Over an 18-hour period we went from the low 40s to 99 degrees. Talk about insanity. That heat wave got me to thinking that it’s just about lemonade season and if it’s one thing you need to know about me, besides the fact that I believe that bacon is the answer to every question, it’s that I looove lemons. This means I love lemonade. I can’t get enough of the stuff. Each summer before I started learning about GMOs and Real Food I used to buy several containers of Minute Maid frozen concentrated lemonade. That stuff…

Real Food Electrolyte Drink
Today I thought I’d put on my Scientist Girl Hat (and my Mechanic Girl Hat) and share with you some information about electrolytes. One of the symptoms of the Hypercalcemia that I’m dealing with is that my electrolytes are all out of whack. Additionally a result of the abnormal parathyroid hormone levels in my blood, my body isn’t able to regulate its electrical system at all- which causes extra stress on a person’s heart, kidney’s and pancreas. Your parathyroid glands control and help regulate your body’s electrical system so when those aren’t functioning properly, you can imagine how off-kilter things become. Think of it like this. Your car needs motor oil for the…

Pineapple Coconut Chia-Colada
I need to create more recipes while under the influence of pain killers because this one is AWESOME! So not kidding! What good is a decade long back injury and twice a year spinal epidural injections if you don’t get a freaking spectacular recipe or two out of the deal?
